Keith - you ought to give it a go.

You'd have to fill in the Political activity declaration, which does state that work for a political party is not a bar to the appointment and indeed, could demonstrate relevant skills & experience.

...although, thinking about it, your political allegiancies might be a bit of an obstacle if they realised you'd be far too sensible to go along with their preferred policies on hydropower!
