PostSubject: CHRIS YATES BOOK LAUNCH, READING & SIGNING - Thursday 26th April, 7pm   Mon Apr 09, 2012 7:04 pm

If anyone is interested:

To mark the publication of his new book, 'Nightwalk' Caught by the River is proud to present an evening with Chris Yates.

Reading, discussion, Q&A and book signing.

Chris Yates is Britain's foremost angling writer and one of the patron saints of Caught by the River. His latest book, Nightwalk, is a fish-free musing on all things nocturnal. Of the book, Chris says, "some of my best memories happened while I was walking through the dark. The night is an uninhabited land and when I'm there it's only me and the true natives, the owls, deer, badgers, glow worms and other creatures that I never get to identify."

Thanks for this,The Brewery in Brick Lane is about a 10 minute walk from where we are based and
will go if not on call.Brick Lanes come on leaps and bounds the last 10 years and when its busy has got a good atmosphere to rival Camden Lock Market.

Had a interesting night last night at reading/signing here's a bit of a review;

Arrived at the Truman Brewery in East LDN a bit late, went past the BBQ stall and tables with people munching and enjoying a glass or two. At the end of Drayers Walk lies a four story building covered with thousands of jump suits, not a brick to be seen! The canopied entrance was complete with carpet, floodlights, paparazzi and suited security guards, i thought "wow this must be some book signing!" but my favourite record shop Rough Trade was next door and the host to Chris' book signing.

I was surprised by the amount of people there, about 60 seated and 30 (including me propping up
the record racks) The 'Uni /Glastonbury' crowd, as I will now call them, were intently listening to Chris.
Beer was provided and the uni crowd was swigging it back!
Must admit, at first I thought this was not my scene. It was a talk about Night walks and the nature what can be seen "You miss a lot by using a torch it takes about twenty minutes for your eyes to adapt to the dark".

Chris was prompted by a MC sitting beside him on stage and dropped his mike from his mouth a couple of times but was learning. The passages read were entertaining with Chris stopping short and saying you could buy the book to find out what happened next.

He told of some little glimmers that I'm sure make for a great little read "Whilst laying flat on the ground looking at Saturn, which has been the brightest star for three weeks, a hare leaped across me and perfectly silhouetted against the star lit sky."

I also learned that when a Roebuck deer lowers his antlers at you the only way to avoid being speared is by wrestling the beast to the ground!

At question time a man (called Will who was from Wiltshire and neighbours with the Rothchild's, as he didn't mind informing everyone!) asked Chris if he would night walk if there was wolves or panthers, Chris replied that wolves were native to Britain and he wish they would introduce them again into Lewisham High Street, the Uni crowd belly laughed and Chris's confidence grew and the gags came thick and fast.

I bought a copy of the book and got Chris to sign it. Altogether a highly entertaining evening.
It was like being back in the Sixties with the hippy nature loving crowd.
LOVE ,PEACE AND HAPPINESS MAN! :afro:
